ABBOTT'S MILL NATURE CENTER

Located in a picturesque, rural setting in southern Delaware, Abbott's Mill Nature Center features:

A big thanks to Carl M. Freeman Foundation FACES for supporting our N.E.E.D.S. program!

DNS received $5,000 to support hands-on programming aligned with Delaware's mandated education standards. 711 children visited Abbott's Mill Nature Center in Sussex County through the N.E.E.D.S. program (Nature Education for Every Delaware Student) Students ranged in ages from Pre-K to Middle School.

  • Year-round natural, cultural, and agricultural history programs available for individuals of all ages and the entire family
  • School field studies, classroom visits and On-Your-School-Grounds programs available in line with current Delaware State Educational Standards.
  • Overnight educational experiences at Redden State Forest Lodge.
  • Girl and Boy Scout programs and service project opportunities available.
  • Canoeing, survival skills,and mill-based programs available for youth groups and other organizations.

Part of 313 acre Milford Millponds Nature Preserve with miles of public hiking trails for all abilities - trail Maps available at the Nature Center; Live Native Amphibians and Reptiles; Mammal, Waterfowl, and Raptor taxidermy displays.

  • Historic water-powered grist and roller mill; ours available for small groups and through scheduled programs. Contact Nature Center for updated schedule.
  • Tours are conducted during programs and by scheduled requests.
  • Teen Naturalist program available for youths, ages 13-17; week-long Summer programs for all ages (June-August). Contact the Nature Center for details.

The Delaware Nature Society has full management responsibilities for all the properties at Abbott's Mill including the 6-acre Cedar Bog Preserve and 21-acre Isaacs Tract, owned by the Nature Society, the core area and buildings owned by the Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the 27-acre Lindale Tract, 12-acre Lee Tract,and the 13-acre Morton Farm, allowned by the Division of Fish & Wildlife.

The Delaware Nature Society also manages the nearby 177-acre Blair's, Savage, and Pope Tracts along Tantrough Branch, Blair's Pond, and Griffith Lake. Hiking and wildlife observation opportunities, as well as a 5K (3.1 miles) cross-country course are available on the extensive trail systems.

The Delaware Nature Society also owns the 110-acre Marvel Saltmarsh Preserve adjacent to Slaughter Beachwhere saltmarsh and coastal ecology programs are conducted.
