Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park
The approximately 160 acre Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park is part of the Adobe Dam Recreation Park, part of the Maricopa County Park system, located in North Phoenix Arizona just south of Pinnacle Peak Road on 43rd Ave. The railroad park houses the Sahuaro Central Railroad Heritage Preservation Society, Inc.(SCRHPS) and its museum, the Arizona Model Railroading Society (AMRS) and the Maricopa Live Steamers (MLS). Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park is primarily open to the public during the winter months from Mid September to early May.
Often called "The Railroad Park", the Adobe mountain Desert Railroad Park has something for everyone whether you're into Model railroading, Railroad History, the arts, outdoor recreation or the need to just get away for an afternoon. It all happens against the beautiful backdrop of one of the most unique places in Phoenix, Arizona.
The park is located just east of the Thunderbird Mountains and just south of Pinnacle peak Rd. on 43rd. Avenue in the city of Phoenix. Supporting a variety of ecosystems within the parks desert flatlands, our visitors are offered a train ride through the natural desert scenery within the park.
A trip begins at the Adobe station and heads West. The engineer has a choice of destinations shortly after he leaves the station, South toward the Go-cart track, West toward the golf course or north toward the museum. More than just a place to take a train ride, the park also offers train layouts in all scales of model railroading, a museum and locations for family picnicking or birthday parties.
We are privileged to have several members who contribute not only their time and talent but also share their equipment in order to provide our visitors an enjoyable Sunday afternoon visit.
Museum
The Adobe Mountain Desert Railroad Park Museum was created by the Sahuaro Central Railroad Heritage Preservation Society, Inc. in order to promote the Preservation of railroad history. The Adobe Mountain Railroad Museum is an active member of the "National Railway Historical Society" and the "Central Arizona Museum Association"
The Museum is located at the Northeast section of the park in an area known as Pottsville. The main building is a 24' X 50' mobile home converted into a display area which is home to a number of railroad artifacts from North America. Many of the displays are on loan from members as well as donations from interested friends. The Museum hosts a extensive collection of research materials, books and magazines pertaining to railroad history and is available to members.
In a small building just north of the main building is an indoor "G" scale train layout. As you walk between the two buildings you can't miss the collection of live steam engines on display outside the Museum.
The Museum is primarily open to the public during the winter months from Mid September to early May. This works out to our advantage in a couple of ways. First of all it's good management in saving power, we don't have to run the A.C as much during the summer months. Second it gives us the summer months to work on major projects without interfering with public rides and viewing artifacts in the museum.
