Allegany Museum

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

The Allegany Museum is a nonprofit all volunteer organization. Originally formed in 1983 to preserve the Western Maryland Railroad Station, the organization has evolved into a museum. We operate without government support for daily operations and plan on continuing to be self-supporting by leasing some of our building at the most competitive rates in the county. However, we continue to seek assistance for capital improvements to restore its historic building.

In 1999, the Allegany Museum purchased the former Post Office/Federal Courthouse building at 3 Pershing Street in Cumberland. We have restored and renovated the second floor of this historic building to house a national class museum. The Museum moved from its temporary location at 81 Baltimore Street to its permanent home in September 2010. The first phase of restoration was made possible by the support of government entities at the local and state levels, as well as private donations.

When completely restored, the building will triple our exhibit space, add space for collections and archival storage, a research center, space for public programs, and greatly expand the Allegany Museum's scope of operations.

Our building is located within and associated with the Canal Place Heritage Area, which is Maryland's first certified heritage area. Canal Place combines historic preservation, recreation, and education with economic development strategies that benefit all of Western Maryland.

The Allegany Museum is playing a major role in the cultural life of the community by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting the material and cultural history of the region. In partnership with State and Local Government entities, the Museum is an important element in the economic revitalization of our region.

MISSION

Allegany Museum is dedicated to creating a welcoming place where visitors can discover the Allegany region's unique heritage and contribution to our Nation's development. We are committed to enriching the intellectual, cultural and economic life of the communities in the region through our collection, preservation, exhibition, and education programs.
