ART 634

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

ART 634 is proud to reside in an 1850s manufacturing facility. Originally built as a wagon and carriage factory adjacent to the Michigan Territorial Prison, this location afforded an abundance of workers and reasonable labor rates for the factory.

Over the years it has been used for warehousing, trucking operations, and numerous illicit and illegal activities. It was spared from a 1950s fire that burned the building to the south on Mechanic, but the rear portion suffered damage. Today it has been reborn as an industry of creativity.

Our logo incorporates the building's long history. The circle of leaves represent the wagon wheel, fashioned from leaves of the historical ginkgo tree directly to our east on Mechanic. We believe that as the industrial revolution pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement, so too has the technological revolution ignited a desire to rediscover our personal creativity.

Hence, our name - ART 634, Center for the Creative Spirit. The spirit has no limitations, so there are no restrictions to the types of creativity birthed and practiced here. Music, dance, photography, painting, hair design, fabric, sculpture, jewelry, retail and handcrafted coffee are all celebrated within the walls of ART 634.
