The Bardstown Art Gallery opened in 1971 in Spalding Hall, the site of a defunct boarding school for boys in Bardstown, Kentucky. After 26 years in that location the gallery moved to its present location, a 1930's Arts & Crafts bungalow, on West Stephen Foster Ave. We are now the oldest private gallery in Kentucky.
The gallery handles contemporary works in the mediums of oil paintings, works on paper, collage & assemblage, ceramics, photographs, and glicees by regional artists of merit. Quarterly exhibitions are scheduled with prices ranging from one hundred dollars to several thousands of dollars.
We opened the gallery and Jim's studios in 1971. We are believed to be the oldest private art gallery in Kentucky and possibly the oldest independent fine art studio as well!
We feature oils, watercolors, and drawings by Jim Cantrell whose studio is upstairs. Because the figure is his forte, portrait commissions are a big part of his work, and because he is sooooo versatile, you will find architecture, landscape, still life, and more in the mix as well. Also carry other regional artists' works.
