Carolina Theater

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

Each year tens of thousands of people enter the Carolina Theatre and, until recently, left knowing nothing about our rich history and legacy in Downtown Durham.

To change that, we have kicked-off a three year fundraising, design and installation effort dedicated to telling the 85 year history of the Carolina Theatre complex. Recently opened in Kirby Lobby, phase one chronicles the 1920's construction as well as a broad overview of the theatre's history. Phase two and three will be dedicated to the volunteers from the 1970's and 1980's and the civil rights struggles of the 1960's.

A Century Downtown | NOW OPEN!

A look at the Carolina Theatre and the artists and films that have appeared over the years. The launching point for the self-guided tour, this exhibit shows how the theater and downtown Durham have evolved over time.

Restoring Hope | COMING SOON

A tribute to the dedicated volunteers of the 1970s and 1980s, this exhibit will tell the story of Connie Moses and her quest to resurrect and restore the Carolina Theatre and the ballroom that bears her name.

Confronting Change | COMING SOON

Taking "no" for an answer was not an option for the heroes that lined Durham streets in protest in the 1960s. This exhibit will tell the story of the integration of the Carolina and the people dedicated to making certain their theater, and their community, had equal access for all.
