History

The original Daphne Public Library was dedicated in 1969. Our current building was dedicated August 18, 1996 and opened to the public in October, 1996. The Phase One Library Addition officially opened in April, 2010. Two more phases of growth are anticipated including an Auditorium (Phase Two) and a larger area for reference, young adults, older children, and meeting space (Phase Three).

Location

The Daphne Library is located at the intersection of Whispering Pines Road and U.S. Highway 98, adjacent to the Daphne Recreation Center and the Daphne Civic Center. The library is composed of designated areas for pre-schoolers, school-age children, young adults and adults. The library is comprised of comfortably-spaced shelving, study areas, reading areas, meeting rooms, a computer lab, a reference office, a community bulletin board, and a book shop. Picnic tables are available on the plaza and grounds of the library.

Meeting Space

The Community Room with adjacent kitchen area will seat up to 50. The smaller Board Room will accommodate 10 to 12. Both rooms are available at no charge to civic organizations and non-profit groups if reservations are made in advance.

Collections

The library collection contains 67,386 items, including books, books-on-tape, books-on-CD, VHS and DVD recordings, newspapers, magazines, reference materials, extensive large print and mystery collections, and Braille.

We offer free wireless Internet access that is available inside or on the grounds of the library. The library offers free remote access 68 state-sponsored online databases within the Alabama Virtual Library, including reference materials for elementary, middle, high school and college students, as well as adults.
