The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts, which is owned and operated by Southeastern Louisiana University, is an historic theatre (circa 1928) that was completely renovated and reopened its doors in 2002. The theatre presents a diverse mix of cultural events year-round, including its anchor October festival, Fanfare, and provides area residents with a grand and elegant setting for entertainment. The renovated theatre boasts an 850-seat performance hall, conference area, administrative offices and sophisticated technical capabilities.

The mission and purpose of the Columbia Theatre is to enhance and support Southeastern Louisiana University as the University serves the educational, economic and cultural needs of Southeastern Louisiana. As the premier performing arts facility for the region, it provides a broad and diverse presentation of the arts. The Columbia Theatre and Southeastern are fulfilling this mission through excellence in programming and by developing mutually supportive relationships with appropriate local and regional organizations. The Columbia serves as a catalyst for promoting cultural, educational and economic growth.

History of the Columbia

Today, visitors gasp when they enter the renovated Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond.

"It's a typical reaction, especially with people who remember it from its earlier days," said Donna Gay Anderson, artistic director of the Columbia Theatre and Fanfare. "The first gasp comes when they enter the lobby, the second gasp comes when they enter the performance hall," Anderson said.

The vintage theater, once regarded as the "jewel in the crown" of Hammond's downtown, was rescued from decades of neglect and restored to its former grandeur and elegance by the efforts of Southeastern, the City of Hammond and the Hammond Downtown Development District. It reopened its doors in January 2002.
