Des Moines County Historical Society
Interactive children's exhibits and activities are integral to the museums maintained by the Des Moines County Historical Society in Burlington, Iowa. The Heritage Center (501 North Fourth) houses "Catfish Corners", a children's museum where young people can try out pioneer experiences. The Bart Howard Room, is a cabaret/performance space within the Heritage Center developed in memory of Bart Howard, who was born and raised in Burlington and composed "Fly Me to the Moon." Live performances are featured in this small venue on a regular basis.
The Heritage Center (501 North Fourth, Burlington), the Phelps House Museum (521 Columbia, Burlington), and the Hawkeye Log Cabin Museum (located at the south end of Main Street in Crapo Park, Burlington) and their changing exhibits are supported by the members and friends of the Des Moines County Historical Society. A small gift shop is also located at the Heritage Center.

The history of this remarkable area is as diverse as the communities of which it is formed.
The Des Moines County Historical Society is a non-profit organization operated by a small staff and many dedicated volunteers. Donations of time and materials related to the history of the county are welcome and appreciated as is monetary support. Admission to DMCHS museums is free to members; non-members pay nominal fees.
