Citizens organize to revitalize their downtown Dothan

Downtown group Downtown Dothan was no exception.

As the buildings and the memories left the minds of the people, the people left downtown. Too many property owners, seeing their

investments lose value, left their buildings to the elements. Some wereused for storage, some were vacated -many not even boarded up.

Downtown Dothan fell into a sad state of disrepair. But there were some businesses that did not leave. Attorneys kept their offices in the area because of the convenience to the Federal Courthouse on West Main Street, and a few doctors stayed as well.

In 1989, a group of concerned citizens started a not-for-profit organization called the Downtown Group. They believed downtown was worth saving.

2010 and 2011 continue to reflect a Renaissance movement downtown. Several new businesses have joined our downtown community to include a dance studio, an accounting firm and a marketing-consulting business. The old Bank Building was purchased and restored on the corner of East Main and North Foster and several old buildings have undergone façade restorations. Downtown continues to attract a variety of new business ventures. Perspective investors continue to check out our inventory of buildings in the Historic District.
