Established in 1874, the Dubuque Museum of Art is the oldest cultural organization in Iowa.
Description
The Dubuque Museum of Art's permanent collection focuses on 20th century American art with an emphasis on American Regionalism. The Museum's priority is to collect and exhibit works by regional artists recognized at the national, regional, and local levels. The collection includes significant works by Grant Wood, Edward S. Curtis, and John Vachon. Local artists represented in the collection include Francesco Licciardi, Dorothy Rossiter, Mauricio Lasansky, and Arthur Geisert.
Iowa's oldest cultural institution established in 1874 located in the heart of downtown Dubuque's cultural corridor.
Our Mission:
The Dubuque Museum of Art seeks to excite, engage, and educate constituents through the presentation of collections, exhibitions, and programming; to form mutually beneficial partnerships to enhance the role of the arts within our community; and to adhere to professional museum standards in all operations.
There was a time when the City of Dubuque was without an art an art museum. Life was somewhat more challenging thth till en, still Dubuquers were often looking for something enjoyable and uplifting to do after a hard day or on the weekend.
So, on FF bebruary 2424, 1874 1874, at the Lorimar House (then on the corner of 8th and Bluff),the Dubuque Art Association was formed.
- This Art Association is the oldest cultural organization in the State of Iowa.
- Its first exhibition was held June 17, 1874.
The Association flourished over the next 28 years. However, in 1904 its members elected to transfer its art collection to the newly completed CarnegieStout Library where a gallery space was made available.
