FOUNTAIN SQUARE PARK

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

While laying out the town that would be called Bowling Green in 1796, brothers George and Robert Moore designated two acres for the construction of public buildings. Those two acres today make up Fountain Square Park, a green and peaceful focal point for the revitalization of downtown Bowling Green.

Restored facades of 19th-century buildings, a renovated Art Deco movie theater, thriving businesses and bustling professionals surround the park's historic fountain, statues, flowers, shrubs, mature trees and benches. Once the site of prohibitionist marches, trolleys, livestock trades and scrap drives, today it is the host of summer concerts, parades, arts and crafts shows and many other festivals and events throughout the year.

The park is a perfect outdoor site for weddings and other special events with electrical access available. For rental information, phone 270-782-0222 or visit the website below.

The statues surrounding the fountain represent the mythological figures of Ceres (goddess of grain), Pomona (goddess of fruit), Melpomane (goddess of tragedy) and Flora (goddess of flowers.) The Fiske Company of New York cast the four statues as well as the two urns at the east and west ends of the park. They are mounted on locally quarried limestone. At the north and south entrances to the park are two arched memorial entries also of Bowling Green limestone.

The lush greenery of the park is due in some part to the early efforts of the Bowling Green Garden Club. Shortly after it was chartered in 1934, the Garden Club commissioned R.L. Sturtevant, a prominent landscape architect from Groton, Massachusetts, to design a planting for the park. With city funding and numerous private contributions, this plan was implemented. Today the park is under the care of the Landscape Division of the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department.
