OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center - Fostering Collaborative Partnerships for Almost Half a Century

US Environmental Protection Agency's Pacific Coastal Ecology Branch develops approaches to assess the effects of human activities on the ecological resources of Pacific Northwest estuaries.

Now in its 47th year, the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport, Oregon has evolved into a leading marine laboratory distinguished by its collaborative research partnerships. Originally established as a marine laboratory for Oregon State University, HMSC currently hosts collaborative research and education programs from seven OSU colleges and six state and federal agencies on HMSC's 49-acre campus. We value our extensive community and industry partnerships, and with a combined budget of over $45M, HMSC is an important economic driver on the Oregon Coast.

As OSU's coastal campus and a base for oceanographic research, HMSC excels in student research opportunities and experiential instruction. We host a thriving summer internship programs and offer a diversity of academic programs for students from community college through post-doc. Managed by Oregon Sea Grant, HMSC's Visitor Center is a key site for public and K-12 education, and serves as a social laboratory for OSU's Free-Choice Learning Lab.

HMSC is a resource for Visiting Scientists and Marine Science Students, combining expertise, location and infrastructure, including a world-class seawater system, experimental wet labs, and OSU's Guin Library.
