The Headwaters Forest Reserve is 7,472 acres of public land located 6 miles southeast of Eureka, CA. The reserve is set aside to protect and preserve the ecological and wildlife values in the area, particularly the stands of old-growth redwood that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon.
Things To Do
- The Elk River Trail is accessible to almost everyone!
- The first 3 miles of the trail is unique as it allows for bike and dog enthusiasts to enjoy the forest. Your dog must be under voice control at all times, or on a leash. Please pick up after your pet!
- Folks with accessibility challenges can appreciate the first mile of trail that is paved and ADA accessible .
- Stride with your stroller along the first mile of paved trail in Headwaters Forest Reserve.
- Take your time along the first mile of paved trail and learn about the natural and cultural history reading the interpretive signs along the trail.
- Take your kids on a quest and learn about the secrets of where woodrats sleep and Falk's past. Find a treasure at the final stop.
- Bring your lunch and picnic at one of the 2 tables along the interpretive trail.
- Stop by the Headwaters Education Center 0.6 miles up the Elk River Trail. Check our news page for scheduled open hours.
- Hike the last 2 miles of single track trail to the old growth, and the 1/2 mile loop through the old growth forest. Hug a tree, kiss a banana slug, or find a woodrats nest on your hike.
- Salmon Pass Trail is for those wanting their own private hike.
