Hidden Lake Gardens began as a simple dream and has become an enduring and evolving living testament to the auras of nature's seasons. The Gardens are indeed like squares on a quilt, a paradise in a park, where there are engagements and playful fun, an escape from the everyday world. Here is found a welcoming reservoir for contemplation and a connection to health and our place in the universe.

In the Gardens, the individual discovers a far away place that is one of the most picturesque in the Midwest and the Nation. Subtle and bold courtyards display trees as artworks, rare cultivars, along with exotic plants in tropical settings. There is every shade of green in the world, including Michigan State University "green", a tribute to the fundamental aspect of the MSU mission and to the expertise provided by the staff and volunteers of the University. From the comfort of your car or meandering footpaths, the visitor has at their disposal a visual treat that ranges from the modest to the magnificent. Come and experience this little piece of heaven on earth.

HIDDEN LAKE GARDENS - A Brief History

Hidden Lake Gardens was donated to Michigan State University (then Michigan State College) in 1945 by Harry A. Fee, an Adrian businessman. He had always dreamed of owning a lake, and, upon his retirement in 1926, he purchased Hidden Lake along with 200 acres of land surrounding it. He repaired and refurbished the old farmhouse, built a greenhouse, and began farming. He soon realized that the land was not suitable to conventional farming or raising livestock and so he began to grow nursery stock. Not wanting to compete with local nurseries during the depression he planted the stock on his own land in an effort to create a "series of pictures," a philosophy that we continue to strive for today. Mr. Fee described Hidden Lake Gardens as a "dream as you go development". He built a road in from Hwy. 50 and landscaped it with a shrub and perennial border. The lake was cleaned out and the small pond and rock garden were constructed.
