Historic Church Tours
No visit to Gettysburg is complete without a visit to some of the historic churches in the town. Some of these churches served as hospitals during the conflict, some were built as memorials to the Battle, and others played a role in the everyday life of the citizens of the time. History comes alive in these churches - four of which were built prior to the Civil War and are still utilized today.
Historic Church Walking Tours is now offering educational and entertaining programs for special tour groups. Dates and times can be arranged to meet a tour group's needs. Groups need to be 25 persons or larger. Arrangements will be made by the eight churches to present a selection of programs relating to the hospital and civilian experiences during and after the battle. The tours (walking or by bus) range in time from one half-hour to two hours. Although HCWT and the participating churches are non-profit, there are charges involved in providing such specialized tours.
These are guided tours that walk you to the particpating churches. At each church, programs and/or narratives will be presented. Some programs may be musical; most will relate factual human interest stories about how the civilian population dealt with the battle of Gettysburg.
We do not provide service for children's groups, though families with children are welcome. The programs are designed for the general public, churches or religious groups would find them of particular interest.
