Historic Fort Wayne
To educate the community about Historic Fort Wayne and its significance to the Northwest Territory, the State of Indiana, and the United States during the 17th and 18th centuries; we will foster an educational experience through interactive programming, as well as by continuously maintaining and restoring the physical structures of Historic Fort Wayne in order that programs may be presented in a historically accurate, period setting.
Our Vision
To foster, encourage, and promote the expansion of our educational programming; establishing collections of pertinent objects, books, documents and illustrations; and the use of our facilities by the public while preserving and improving them for future generations.
How we got started
In the spring of 2004, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department issued a request for proposals for a comprehensive plan to revitalize the Old Fort. Of the requests, one came to the attention of a group of concerned citizens who subsequently formed Old Fort Revitalization Project. Their goal was to create a viable proposal which addressed the needs of the site. After assessing community and corporate interest, a possible volunteer base, and the 2003 feasibility study, a proposal was submitted. The decision was made to move ahead, and Historic Fort Wayne, Inc. was formed.
The organization is dedicated to the purpose of creating a permanent endowment, routine maintenance, and developing a historically based education program. With private and corporate investors plus local volunteers, Historic Fort Wayne, Inc. believes that this endeavor will play an integral role in the revitalization of the downtown area.
