Our Mission

Our mission is to enhance the perception, quality of life, and long term economic health of the entire Jacksonville Community through a coordinated and sustained effort to revitalize the city's downtown district.

Our Vision

The Jacksonville Main Street District ( Church Street to Clay Avenue and Beecher Street to LaFayette Avenue) will continue to be the traditional and historic "center" of the community: the seat of government; the hub of commercial, professional, financial, service, cultural, and specialized retail activity; and the symbol of civic identity and community pride. The downtown will show economic and social vitality, as well as businesses and industry to the community. It's central location and proximity to educational institutions will reinforce the character and image of a "historic town square".

Traffic, circulation, and parking patterns will be altered to provide better access to the downtown for pedestrians and automobiles. The downtown will be attractive, clean, and perceived as a safe and inviting place to be. Historic buildings will be well maintained and restored to reflect their architectural beauty and integrity. Existing canopies will be removed and more appropriate signage will highlight the businesses. Streetscape improvements, including trees, will enhance and beautify the downtown, surrounding area, and entryways. A plan will be developed for quad buildings.

Downtown buildings will be full of thriving, quality businesses that reflect a diversified mix of restaurants, service, retail, professional, and entertainment businesses. Appropriate new specialty businesses, such as coffee shops and a bakery, will add to the quality of life in the community and are a draw for residents and visitors. Existing retail businesses will have the tools and incentives to expand and serve new markets. Surrounding small towns in the region will prefer coming to Jacksonville for goods and services, as well as for cultural and recreational opportunities. The thriving downtown will influence new residents, businesses, and industry to locate in Jacksonville. The tax base will increase and the community'[s overall economy will improve as a result of downtown revitalization activity.

Residents and visitors alike will have a positive impression of the Jacksonville Main Street District. The downtown will be a place bustling with social activity, where people of all ages and backgrounds feel a sense of belonging and has something to do and a reason to be downtown.

All segments of the community will be involved in and excited about the visible projects being accomplished and the long-range downtown revitalization plan. Financial incentives will be established to encourage the implementation of this plan. Private citizens will take responsibility for property and business improvements, working in partnership with city government and other organizations in the community. the vision for the Jacksonville Main Street District will have captured the imagination of its people. Apathy and a sense of futility will be replaced with hope, common purpose and confidence in the future.

Our Principles

  • Comprehensive: One project cannot revitalize a downtown: an ongoing series of initiatives is vital to build community support and lasting progress.
  • Incremental: Small projects make a big difference: Proudly make steady, incremental improvements.
  • Self-Help: Only local leadership can initiate long-term success by garnering community involvement and commitment to the revitalization effort. We must rely on ourselves to fix the problems.
  • Partnerships: This program requires support and expertise from both public and private sectors.
  • Assets: Existing local assets provide the solid foundation for a successful program.
  • Quality: Excellence in every aspect of this program is the goal.
  • Change: A successful program will shape public attitudes, habits, and perceptions to support the revitalization process and downtown's purpose.
  • Implementation: Develop plans and carry them out.
