The mission of the Juneau Symphony is to give local musicians a platform to perform and develop musically, to provide live, high quality symphonic music for the community, and to offer musical opportunities and support for youth.

The Symphony currently runs these programs to support our mission:

The Juneau Symphony Orchestra (JSO) - a full size, volunteer adult orchestra that includes over 100 musicians. They perform four main-stage concert series and one chamber music concert series per year under the direction of maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett. The orchestra is most commonly referred to as just "The Juneau Symphony".

The Juneau Student Symphony (JSS) - a full size orchestra for students of all ages. Their membership is 70 percent school age children and they focus on developing musicianship and the joy of making music together. They perform 3 concert pairs per year and a spring tour to other Southeast Alaska communities under the direction of Rick Trostel. The JSS was an independent organization in the 1980's. They have been a Juneau Symphony program since 1988. JSS musicians pay tuition to participate.

The Juneau Symphony Chorus - an adult, volunteer chorus that joins the orchestra annually to perform a large choral work such as Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Singers enroll without auditions and pay a fee to participate.

Music in the Schools - an annual school assembly concert for all 4th and 5th grade students in the Juneau School District. Transportation is provided and students attend free of charge. The program also sends musicians into the classrooms to talk about classical music and to demonstrate their instruments.

Kids2Concerts - a program to provide complimentary Symphony concert tickets to schools in the Juneau School District and to members of the Juneau Student Symphony. Tickets are mailed to all School District music teachers prior to each mainstage concert series. The teachers are responsible for distributing the tickets to students of their choice. JSS members receive complimentary tickets at the door of all JSO concerts.

Youth Solo Competition (YSC) - a concerto competition open to all of Southeast Alaska's young musicians. The senior division winners are invited to perform their concerto with the full Juneau Symphony Orchestra the following year. Junior division winners and some honorable mention winners are invited to perform with the Juneau Student Symphony.
