Kankakee Railroad Museum
Founded in 1999 by the Kankakee Model
Railroad Club under the direction of Glenn Johnson and Harold Woods.
Located at the North End of the Historic Illinois Central Depot in downtown Kankakee.
The Railroad Museum began in 1999 with the building ofthree mod€ltrain layouts. A Pullman car was purchased and restorod with half ofthe car converted into an elegant dining car. A caboose and Kankakee trolley car were added, and tho historic Kankakee trolley car is being restor€d.
The Railroad lMuseurn has hosted visitors of all ages. The Pullman car has hosted dinners, brunches, birthday parties, and many community tours. Classes of school age children have been coming to enjoy th€ model kains and to experience what rail travel was like fortheir grandparents or groat-grandparents.
Educational opportunities such as these are important for our community, but they do not come without a cost, Restoration work contlnues on the trolley and restoration ofthe caboose has neods to be done. Since the Museum's budget is limited, we are appealing to our friends in the community for support to preserve the railroading hislory of Kankakee County.
