Kansas Underground Salt Museum

A journey into the exotic world of a working salt mine is possible in very few places on Earth. The KUSM has a broad appeal for all who seek an indelible experience, and provides the only opportunity of this kind in the Western Hemisphere.

Located in Hutchinson not far from the equally good Cosmosphere this was extremely interesting and informative. It is 650 ft underground and involves a self-guided tour as well as an underground train ride and a dark ride on a sort of extended golf trolley. These take you deep into the heart of parts of the mine that are no longer used and the narration by the guides is excellent - it really is fascinating stuff. The tour allows you to stop and pick a piece of salt to take home which is quite a nice touch.

Take advantage of this unique subterranean learning environment by making reservations for

Salt Academy an enhanced educational experience!

After descending 650 feet underground on the hoist, students will experience a walking tour that is handicap accessible.

It will include a guided tour of the galleries plus an area that is only available to school groups where students will be able to choose a souvenir piece of salt. Also included is a tour of the Underground Vaults and Storage exhibit, and the gift shop, if requested in advance and time allows (add 30 minutes).
