Laredo Main Street
Laredo Main Street was first designated as a Texas Main Street Urban City by the Texas Historical Commission's Community Heritage Development Division in 2008. This program aids Texas cities to revitalize their historic downtowns by utilizing a four point approach of organization, design, economic restructuring, and promotion. In keeping with the four point approach Laredo Main Street created the monthly "El Centro de Laredo Farmers Market" which officially launched in October 2010.
The farmers market takes place every third Saturday of the month and is held at historic Jarvis Plaza. The market has boasted over 1,000 visitors during a single market. Laredo Main Street works closely with several organizations such as Keep Laredo Beautiful in establishing community gardens throughout the city and H.E.A.L. Health Eating Active Living which promotes healthy lifestyles. Additionally, the market is innovative in the acceptance of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) along with the Lone Star Card, extending promotion of a healthy lifestyle to Laredo's low-income families.
"The generosity of the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation will allow the mission of Laredo Main Street to preserve and promote downtown heritage to flourish and continue to grow," said LMS Board President Hector "Tito" Garcia. The contribution by the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation will aid in growing established partnerships with vendors and programs and allowing new partnerships to be created for the "El Centro de Laredo Farmers Market".
