The Main Street Approach
Across the country, downtowns are being rediscovered. Be they principal corridors in small towns or commercial districts in large cities, 'Main Streets' are coming back into their own. By using the Main Street Four-Point Approach® to revitalization, central business districts are managing change locally through economic development efforts rooted in historic preservation to create working, growing, and aesthetically pleasing business centers.
This momentum began in 1980, when the National Trust for Historic Preservation established the National Main Street Center to assist nationwide downtown revitalization efforts. From this, grew the Wisconsin Main Street Program in 1987, which advocates for the use of the Main Street Four-Point Approach® through traditional development strategies such as marketing, business recruitment and retention, real estate development, market analysis, public improvements, and restoration of the historic downtown character.
