New Embassy Theatre

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

The New Embassy Theatre, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, formed in December 1997 to revivify this shining example of Thirties Art Deco for use as a multi-purpose facility for Cumberland denizens. For the past fourteen years, the New Embassy Theatre has served as a venue for live performance, film, dance and music, as well as rentals to diverse groups. The proximity of this flicker palace to senior centers, area historical and tourist attractions, and schools, makes it a desirable entity in the renaissance Cumberland is enjoying. It is also significant to mention that this is the only example of an area film house not taken by the wrecker's ball, so it is advantageous that Allegany County citizens and their visiting friends have a place for entertainment and local culture on the Downtown Cumberland Mall.

Since reopening in late 1998, the New Embassy has produced dozens of plays and comedies such as Harvey, Greater Tuna, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Odd Couple; classic musicals including Hair, Cabaret, and Threepenny Opera; original historical works including the three musicals in the Shanty Town Trilogy and Go West, Young George; composer tributes to Broadway legends from Irving Berlin to Kander and Ebb to Frank Loessor; classic films including B-movies, Hitchcock, westerns and singalongs to classics like The Wizard of Oz; numerous rock events featuring local bands from the Distorted Penguins to Sonic Mule to Bored Beyond Belief, and touring acts like Headquarters and The Berlin Project; symposiums such as "Water, Road, Rail and Trail", on local transportation history; and many other special events, including the Lavender Lounge and Queen of Queen City Pageant. During the past season we have had great success with offering a regular schedule of classic films at least once a month. We know we have made a difference in tri state area arts awareness, and a place where people can have entertainment fun of all kinds. The Embassy Board of Directors hopes to maintain an allied arts momentum with your help!
