Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

For over 189 years, Newport Presbyterian Church has been a viable, contributing entity as it seeks to minister to the moral and spiritual hunger in our community. As agents of God's ministry on earth, we feel we must continue to spread the good news as we strive toward the goal of "building with Christ for Eternity."

Newport Presbyterian Church is one of the Friendliest Churches in Newport, Tennessee and because of its early service, visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains can worship and then have most of the day to explore Gods wonderful creation. Of course, all are welcome to stay for Sunday School and to join us throughout the week and month for a variety of events at the church that strengthen the spiritual and emotional well being of the community. Join us to see what God has for you this Sunday.

A Brief History of the

Newport Presbyterian Church

Originally organized as the Pisgah Presbyterian Church by a commission of Union Presbytery. Twelve charter members comprised the membership when the moderator, Dr. Isaac Anderson at Anderson Academy, preached the first sermon on August 16, 1823. Population shifts and increases in Church membership necessitated moves to larger structures in 1837, 1859, and 1897.

In 1898, the congregation petitioned Holston Presbytery to change the name of the Church to Newport Presbyterian Church, which was done. The congregation continued to worship at the downtown McSween Avenue location until the pressing needs for more adequate space for its ministry and more adequate parking space could no longer be ignored. The Church purchased in 1967 six acres on Hedrick Drive and construction on a new Church was begun. The current structure was dedicated on May 4, 1969. As a result of reunion between the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS), the so-called "southern branch," and the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA), the so-called "northern branch." the Newport Presbyterian Church elected to join the Presbyterian Church, USA, On April 1, 1985.
