Oakwoods Country Club

As is clear, Oakwoods Country Club has a long, rich history of providing recreational and social opportunities to the citizens of Wilkes and surrounding counties. Most importantly the club is still doing that and doing it well.

The Oakwoods Country Club story is one of a small town golf club, passion for golf, community activism, and painstaking construction in the beautiful North Carolina foothills.

Oakwood's long history begins in the autumn of 1952 when a number of prominent Wilkes County citizens interested in building a golf course for the people of Wilkes met in the Forest Hills home of Pat M. Williams, Jr. and his wife Dottie.

The Course

Oakwoods Country Club is nestled in the foothills of North Carolina among the ghosts of moonshiners and NASCAR. The club opened in 1954 with the original 9 holes designed by Arthur Hamm, a student and former apprentice of the great Donald Ross. Local design legend, Ellis Maples finished the 18 hole layout with an additional 9 that opened in 1964. The course underwent a facelift in 1971 by architect Tom Jackson and was again restored to all its glory in 2000 and 2001 by architect Kris Spence. Spence modernized the greens and tees giving the course its signature fast playing surfaces.

The course is challenging with many elevation changes throughout. Views of the surrounding Blue Ridge and Brushy Mountains may steal your attention during the round. Although the course is short by many of today's standards, it is truly a shot maker's golf course. Dog legs, bunkers, and water challenge you around every turn. Hit the big drive and leave yourself a short iron into some holes, but be careful as there is trouble awaiting the errant shot. Once you have found the fairway, the real challenge begins. Well guarded greens accept the well struck shots, but true to the old fashioned design of the course, an errant approach will leave a difficult up and down to salvage par. Greens that roll 9.5 to 10 on the Stimp Meter will challenge even the best putters.

The Pool

The Pool at Oakwoods was completely renovated in 2007 including a repainting of the pool surface, a new rubberized flooring around the pool and a new fence. There are numerous lounge chairs to relax in as well as patio sets with umbrellas for those who want to stay in the shade. The main pool area is Olympic sized with a diving board and there is also a kiddie pool area for the little ones. Lifeguards for the main pool are on duty at all times.

The OCC pool season is Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The pool is available to all members and their immediate families at no charge. Fees apply to all guests. Fee for in town guest is $5.00 and out of town guest is $3.00. Members must sign themselves and their guest in at the gate when arriving. All guests are limited to six visits per season.
