Peoria Public Library

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

The Peoria Public Library was founded in 1880 as one of the first tax-supported libraries in Illinois. Any citizen of Peoria is entitled to a library card and that library card opens the doors to one of Illinois' largest collections of information and entertainment through books, periodicals, movies, music, art, displays, programming for all ages, public computers with internet access and wifi access for wireless internet devices.

Edward M. Szynaka, Director, was hired by an nine-member board of trustees who are in turn appointed by the Mayor of Peoria. The board of trustees sets policy while the Director and staff see to the day-to-day operation of the library.

The Peoria Public Library has five locations and a bookmobile. Many services are now offered over the internet on the e-library page of the website. Peoria Public Library participates in inter-library loan assuring patrons of an almost limitless access to the books and information that are difficult to find. This system also assures Peoria Public Library cardholders that they may use their card to borrow materials from libraries in the surrounding areas.

The Friends of Peoria Public Library is a group of dedicated volunteers who raise funds for the library. The Friends run several book sale rooms as well as an annual book sale and other events.
