Kids are the Scientists at Port Discover! Located in the middle of beautiful downtown Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Port Discover is fun-filled, hands-on science center for the kid in all of us!
In-Center Activities
Open the door to Port Discover and you'll find kids-and families-engaged in the fun of science! Whether it's taking off in a flight simulator, identifying the parts of a human skeleton, or harvesting in the garden, Port Discover provides educational and entertaining science activities for all! Getting Off the Ground
Take off with Port Discover's amazing aviation exhibit that features a flight simulator, kid-sized air traffic control tower, the popular Bernoulli Blower, role-playing outfits and kits that will spark the pilot in you! Getting Off the Ground is made possible by Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation.
Kinetic Kids
Check out Port Discover's child-friendly Albemarle Hospital to explore different health care occupations or hop over to the As Fit as Can Be fitness center to test your active and resting heart rate. Visit the A Healthier Me nutrition center to learn about building a healthy menu and the secret to food labels. Vidant Health, in collaboration with the Albemarle Hospital Foundation, supports Port Discover's Kinetic Kids programs through their regional Community Benefit Grants Program.
The Natural World
Port Discover is crawling with native species of Eastern North Carolina-toads, frogs, fish, beetles--plus our friends the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. From soft cuddly rats to the slimy vermicompost bin, there are many critters to discover. Also, don't miss Angus' World for a chance to meet Angus--our bearded dragon--and see his habitat.
Kid's Grow Garden
Open Port Discover's back door to the Kid's Grow Garden and explore the science of gardening, renewable energy, and a fossil pit. This amazing garden space provides plenty of food for thought, along with a beautiful outdoors classroom. Toddler Area
Tot Spot is a fun and interactive space for the little ones. The Tot Spot features a puppet theater, x-ray table, sensory table, building boxes, magnetic board and interactive games that change monthly.
Experimentation Station
Try your hand at being a real scientist at our Experimentation Station. Lab-based inquiry experiments, designed to reinforce the scientific method, change frequently so there's always something new to try!
