The Scurry County Museum is a family friendly place that Scurry County residents and folks "just passing through" can enjoy visiting. Our beautiful permanent exhibit showcases the history of the region, and our South Gallery rotating exhibit hosts a wide variety of additional exhibits, art shows and special events.
Special events include presentations on historical topics, book signings, workshops and guided tours. We may be able to tailor our programs specifically for your school class, club or organization, so if you have something special in mind, please let us know! We're always eager for community input, and the feedback you provide will help us to better serve you.
The Scurry County Museum is situated on the Western Texas College (WTC) in Snyder, Texas. Designed by a local committee and built during Phase II of the WTC construction in 1974, the museum has enjoyed many years of community support. A picturesque waterfall near the main entrance welcomes visitors. In addition to our permanent and rotating exhibits, we also have a museum store with Scurry County and Snyder t-shirts, mugs, ornaments as well as books on subjects of local and regional interest.
The Scurry County Museum is constantly striving to improve our outreach and support in Scurry County and west Texas. We welcome anyone that would like to volunteer for our museum. Our goal is to improve and expand our community involvement and interaction.
The collections area of the museum includes a large freight elevator which enables cars, carriages, and motorcycles to be displayed. In addition to a wood shop for building exhibits, the museum boasts a research area, a darkroom and enough storage space for several carriages, not to mention original Chevron gas pumps, newspaper printing presses, saddle shop machinery, sewing machines, furniture of all kinds, quilts, firearms, books, photographs and county records dating back to the 1880's. When you visit the museum, what you see on exhibit only represents the smallest portion of the wealth of historical information which has been gathered on Scurry County.
The museum has been accredited by the American Association of Museum (AAM) in 1979 and again in 1999. They are scheduled to have their next evaluation in 2014.
