Key to the Future - New Management Structure for the Seattle Aquarium
On July 1, 2010, the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society assumed management of the Seattle Aquarium from the City of Seattle, Department of Parks and Recreation which has operated the Aquarium since its opening in 1977.
Through a 20-year Management and Use Agreement with the City of Seattle Society CEO Robert W. Davidson assumes management of the overall organization from John R. Braden, who retired after 26 years with the City of Seattle. The City retains ownership of the pier structures, buildings and major maintenance responsibility. This transition is the culmination of a long process, and is the management model used by most leading zoos and aquariums across the country. The new management structure will enhance funding for aquarium programming and animal care while serving a broader conservation and education mission.
Even prior to the official transition on July 1, the Aquarium Society has for many years been working as a partner with the City on management of the Aquarium on a number of fronts including strategic direction, concessions, exhibit development, fundraising, membership and marketing.
Because of this cooperative relationship, we don't expect our members, guests and friends to notice any immediate difference while visiting the Aquarium. However, over time the transition will allow us to expand our exhibits and educational efforts, and lead the redevelopment of Seattle's Central Waterfront.
We look forward to the next chapter of the Aquarium's story and your continuing support!
