Solano County Library History

The Solano County Library was established by the Board of Supervisors in 1914. The County Library resided in a number of locations until it moved to its first permanent home in Fairfield at the corner of Union and Texas streets in 1931 - now a historical gem located adjacent to the new County Administration Center. Over the years, the seven cities in the County joined, left, merged or affiliated with the Library. Today, the County Library serves five of the seven cities in the County - Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville and Vallejo. Benicia and Dixon have their own libraries but are partners with the County Library in providing an online catalog and databases to all County residents. The Solano County Library is thriving. From five libraries in 1990, it has grown to eight and another branch in the planning stages. Most of the libraries have been modernized with a focus on quick, convenient customer service, good collections of books, movies, music and more: nice furnishings, up-to-date technology and a place for people to come, browse, relax, read and discuss the topics of the day. Last year, there were 1.5 million visits to the Library.

Welcome to the Solano County Library! This is your place and we have something for everyone. That something includes the latest best sellers, movies and music, a rich collection of books on every subject you can imagine, reading programs for children, book discussion groups for all ages, computers with access to the Internet and electronic resources, computer training classes, homework help and interesting programs on topics of the day. Add to this mix a helpful staff, comfortable seating and a warm, welcoming place to come and you won't want to leave once you get here.

If you can't stay or are in a hurry, we make it easy for you to be in and out on your timeframe. You can easily pick up books and other materials you've asked us to hold for you and then quickly check them out at our Express Check-out machines.
