St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

St. Stephen's has become a spiritual home for people of all religious and non-religious backgrounds. This makes for interesting table conversation at our parish potlucks, and serves to enhance our worship & fellowship. It is our belief that we all travel our spiritual journey at our own pace, but not on our own. Each individual's presence keeps us moving on that path toward God.

Your presence is most welcome here. Come and worship with us, for it is in our worship that we seek out the presence of God, joining together in the passing of the peace and the breaking of the bread. Come and experience the Grace of God.

History

Our ministry in this place began 142 years ago on July 6, 1870, with the arrival of R.C. Jordan, his wife Mary and their two daughters, to Grand Island. They found a thriving 12-year-old railroad town of 500 souls with a vigorous business district but not one church holding regular services! On Sundays the stores were open and in full blast. Before a month had passed, Mrs. Jordan determined to hold a Sunday School in their home-and about thirty children came to the first meeting! Thus began a Sunday School that continues to the present day, although it is now held on Wednesday evening.

In 2000, St. Stephen's purchased the building, located east of the church, and renamed it the St. Stephen's Community Center. The center provides office space and meeting rooms at reasonable rates to non-profit agencies as part of our community outreach ministry.

In 2002 the sanctuary of the church was renovated and the altar rail was made handicapped accessible. Nathaniel Lewis' Eagle Scout project in 2001 added a Meditation and Prayer Garden between the church and the community center.

We move into the 21st century thankful for the opportunities for our continuing ministry in this place.
