The Sumter Little Theatre is on an ongoing quest to find volunteers from all walks of life with and without experience.

Overview

Organized in 1941, the Sumter Little Theatre was chartered in April 1949 as the Community Theatre. The name was changed to The Sumter Little Theatre in 1966 and non-profit status was granted at that time. The theatre re-organized in 1987 and was relocated to the Sumter County Cultural Center at 14 Mood Avenue. The theatre operates under the guidance of a board of trustees, consisting of individuals from the corporate, educational, military and artistic sectors of the community. The Sumter Little Theatre is on an ongoing quest to find volunteers from all walks of life with and without experience.

Youth Theatre

Theater for and by children and young people is an integral part of the Sumter Little Theatre. The Theatre School is the center of the youth program providing a unique environment conducive to learning various theater skills. In this creative setting, students "learn by doing." They are involved in activities designed to develop those skills and talents that are fundamental to theater participation and beneficial to other aspects of the student's life. Students learn to appreciate the responsibility required in producing plays and they look forward to working toward excellence both on the stage and off. Besides the two-hour drama class each week, there are many other learning opportunities. Students may audition for the three youth productions and subscription plays offering parts for young actors. As students advance, they are encouraged to learn and take responsibility in various areas of technical theater. Students also volunteer to serve as ushers for all performances.
