The New Children's Museum

Thank You! Your rating has been saved.

The New Children's Museum is a new model of children's museum whose mission is to stimulate imagination, creativity and critical thinking in children and families through inventive and engaging experiences with contemporary art.

Why We're Different

We commission art pieces directly from leading contemporary artists rather than reinterpreting existing works of art or applying an artistic element to a hands-on children's activity. By asking artists to create pieces with tactile, physical and participatory components, NCM opens a world of art to children through opportunities to observe and create.

Since re-opening in 2008, the Museum has launched a series of Museum-wide thematic exhibitions featuring original works of art, designed to help our visitors think, play and create. Featuring a wide array of art and inspiring creativity through a range of topics, our previous exhibitions include Childsplay (2008), Animal Art (2010) and our current exhibition, TRASH (2011 - 2013). The Museum is excited to be preparing for our next big exhibition, which will launch in October, 2013.

What we offer

NCM offers opportunities for children of all ages to experience the arts in ways that are meaningful to them, whether it's an energetic romp through the climbing structures, a thoughtful sculpting of a clay figure during a day visit, or recurring participation in camps, workshops and other in-depth programming.

What our building looks like

Our environmentally sustainable, 50,000-square-foot building houses expansive galleries, open studio environments and an Arts Education Center offering unique classes and camps.

Why you should come visit

The New Children's Museum empowers children to think, play and create through participatory exhibitions, engaging art-making activities, captivating artistic performances and in-depth educational opportunities. Serving all ages, from toddler to teen, NCM inspires new ways to see the world through the language of art. Including a cafe, abundant seating, quiet space for parents and infants and an outdoor park, the Museum provides a comfortable and engaging environment for the entire family to enjoy together.

We offer outdoor play too

Across the street from the building is a beautiful park, extending the museum visit outdoors with space for running and climbing as well as a view of the trains and trolley going by. Designed by Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects, the park features climbing structures, swings, hard and soft surface playrooms and sand play. The acclaimed poet Quincy Troupe collaborated with SPLA to create poems inspired by, and integrated with the park features.
