ToonSeum

The mission of the ToonSeum is to celebrate the art of cartooning. Our goal is to promote a deeper appreciation of the cartoonists and their work through hands-on workshops, community outreach, cartoon-oriented educational programming, and exhibitions of original cartoon art.

Pittsburgh, PA- November 2012. Superheroes have entered into a new realm of artistic expression as it enters the art world not as a comic or cartoon, but as a impressionistic representation of a epic proportions. Beginning on November 21st, the Toonseum will host David Leblanc's first solo exhibition "New Action Evolution".

Pittsburgh has always been one step ahead in the world of Pop art with local innovators such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Burton Morris, David Leblanc continues that Pop art tradition of deriving inspiration from the comic arts.

In the past, the Toonseum has mainly focused on comic and cartoon art, specifically original animation cels, comic book pages, and other production art. Bringing LeBlanc's impressionistic imagery to the Toonseum is a great re-imagining of the Toonseum's pop culture perspective.

David LeBlanc's "New Action Evolution" is a different kind of super hero exhibit, but your favorite superheroes will still be present in full regale. Leblanc was inspired by the Action Comics of the 1940's and 50's and uses these themes to convey a vibrant action through the use of color and abstract expressionistic brush stroke.

"Comics have long been an influence on mainstream and pop art." Said ToonSeum Executive Director, Joe Wos. "David's work is a loving homage to that influence and the golden ages of both pop art and the superhero comic!"
