Troup County Historical Society Archives
The Troup County Historical Society Archives provides a central location for the permanent preservation of historical papers and assists in the management of local government records for Troup County, Georgia. Our facilities are located at 136 Main Street in LaGrange.
Overview and Mission
The Troup County Historical Society is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting a greater appreciation of Troup County's heritage.
The Troup County Historical Society was founded in April, 1972, as the Ocfuskee Historical Society. The name changed in 1981. The purpose of the Troup County Historical Society is "to increase and diffuse knowledge and a greater appreciation of sites, structures, events, personalities, and all other things which pertain to the development of Troup County, Georgia, and to acquire, hold, improve, preserve, develop and restore sites, buildings, and residences or other structures of historic and architectural interest, to promote tours, establish educational institutions and museums, to foster archeological research, mark Indian trails and to prepare and sell publications." The Troup County Historical Society meets periodically and publishes a quarterly newsletter. The Society is an Affiliate Chapter of the Georgia Historical Society.
Holdings include Troup County government and court records, City of LaGrange records, and files of Troup County Education. Both records management and archival services are provided to the local governments. Typical records under the Archives care include 1828 Superior Court cases, 1930s school records, non-current court and office files, and tax digests dating back to 1893. Guidelines from the Georgia Department of Archives and History are used to determine how long and in what form records are to be kept.
Manuscript collections include letters, diaries, church records, photographs, and books and pamphlets relating to Troup County and West Georgia. Family plantation records, Civil War diaries, files of local photographers during the 1930s and 1940s, and club records can be found here. We welcome additional donations.
Our genealogy and local history library contains books relating to Troup County, Georgia, and most southeastern states. LaGrange city directories, high school yearbooks, industry publications, and family Bibles are a few of the items found. Census microfilm for all of Georgia is available for 1970 to 1920. LaGrange newspapers, dating back to 1868, are stored on microfilm. Family histories, both published volumes and unpublished manuscripts, are collected and available to researchers. (No original documents or books are circulated outside the Archives; however, photocopies can usually be obtained.)
Some of our records may be accessed via the web at the Troup County Digital Archives, a joint project of the LaGrange Memorial Library and Troup County Archives. This digital collection includes Troup County marriage and deed records dating back to 1828 and a photographic database.
136 Main Street is also home to Legacy Museum on Main. The museum is home to a permanent exhibit gallery which features the history and development of West Georgia. The Charter Foundation Rotating Gallery spotlights temporary exhibits featuring collections which range from the archives collections to nationally recognized traveling exhibits.
