Welcome to the MCRD Command Museum. The MCRD Command Museum is a Blue Star Museum!

Our mission is to provide an educational setting that portrays the legacy of the Marine Corps. We accomplish this by:

  • Creating exhibits about the history of the Marine Corps from the late 19th century to the present day
  • Maintaining a reference center which contains an archives and a research library
  • Training recruits in Marine Corps history
  • Developing curricula of Marine Corps history, tradition, and values
  • Providing classes and tours for Marines, students, and groups within the civilian community
  • Preserving artifacts of enduring value in accordance with the museum's mission and collection development statement

Admission to the museum; classes and tours; and information and services from the reference center are free and open to the public.

About the MCRD Command Museum

The MCRD Command Museum first opened its doors in 1987. The museum's focus is the history of the Marine Corps in the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the Marines' presence in Southern California. Since it's opening, the Command Museum has continued to expand its exhibits and galleries.

The Command Museum also contains a reference center consisting of a research library and archives, staffed by a professional Archivist. Its holdings include rich collections of books, papers, ephemera, and photographs.

About MCRD San Diego

MCRD's distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival architecture was master-planned by noted Architect, Bertrand Goodhue. Goodhue also designed many of the buildings in San Diego's Balboa Park, as well as the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.

MCRD is significant not only for its architecture, but also for its long history. Opening in 1923 as Marine Base San Diego, the Marines have served in this same location for over three quarters of a century.

Today, MCRD San Diego trains male recruits living west of the Mississippi River to become Marines. It also houses Drill Instructor School, Recruiters School, and is the headquarters of the 12th Marine Corps District.
